Our Story: For the Love of Hampton’s Cats
Clever Cats Rescue didn’t start in an office; it started on the streets of Hampton, Virginia. It began with a few dedicated volunteers seeing a need, cats that were hungry, kittens born in parking lots, and friendly strays who just needed a chance to be someone’s pet again.
We realized that to truly help our community, we needed to be “clever” about our approach. We couldn’t just rescue our way out of the problem; we had to address it at the source through TNR, while providing a gold standard of care for every cat that enters our program.
Who We Are
We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization run entirely by passionate volunteers. We aren’t a large, impersonal shelter; we are a grassroots team of neighbors helping neighbors. Every cat in our care is treated like family from the moment they are trapped or rescued until the moment they walk through their forever front door.

Because rescuing takes more than just heart—it takes a strategy.

It’s Clever to Vet: We don’t cut corners. Every cat is spayed/neutered and vaccinated to ensure a healthy future for the cat and peace of mind for the adopter.
It’s Clever to Care: We take the time to socialize our rescues, ensuring they are truly ready for domestic life.
Our Vision for Hampton
We envision a Hampton where every community cat is cared for, every colony is stabilized, and no friendly cat is left to fend for itself. We are working toward a day when our “paws on the ground” efforts are no longer an emergency response, but a sustainable part of our city’s culture.
